Making The Grade

June 22nd, 2008 by melisendabcs

By Annagail Lynes Here–” I said, handing my mother my progress report as I walked into her room. I braced myself for the inevitably screaming I was sure to hear. “My teacher says you have to sign this.” My mother looked at the card, then at me. “How could you be getting a ‘D’ in Earth Science?” Some students have a natural ability for academics. They receive excellent marks, yet rarely crack open their textbooks. Others have to study night and day to get the same marks. Its not that some students are smart, and others are dumb. It is a matter of tapping into what study methods work for each student. Here are seven ways you can study more effectively and improve your grades: Track Assignments The first step is to keep track of assignments. Some loose-leaf binders come with school-year or all-year calendars. If you dont find one you like, consider buying a teachers’ planning calendar from an office supply store. It can be inserted into the front of your binders and used to record assignments. Your teachers may provide you with assignment sheets. These sheets can be slipped in front of the calendar. The day the assignments and tests are announced, work out a study schedule. Commit To A Regular Time And Place For Homework You should study every day to continue to make progress. Homework time doesn’t have to be a hassle if you are flexible with your schedule. Some students like to start their homework right after school. With their homework finished, they are free to go out or watch television. Other students prefer to relax first, then do their homework with a fresh perspective. Once you have committed to a homework time, stick to it. Where you study is as important as setting a regular study time. You may enjoy studying at your bedroom desk or lying on the floor in the living room. No matter where you study, the environment should be noise-free and well-lighted. You should be able to spread out your books and papers. Also make sure you have all the supplies you need within your reach. Be Conscientious Every night make sure your homework is done, is correct and is orderly. Neat homework and projects earn higher grades. In the business world, if you make a sloppy presentation, you will lose the client’s account. Also turn your homework in on time. After the test and assignments are handed back, sit down with them and see where you made mistakes. Why were the errors made and how could you prevent similar errors in the future? Write notes on the assignments and tests. Make a file for the test and notes, for cumulative tests later. Use Memorization Techniques In order to remember lists, try inventing a combination of letters (an acronym). Each letter will give you a clue to an idea you need to remember. For example, BRASS is an acronym for how to shoot a rifle–Breath, Relax, Aim, Sight, Squeeze. You could also make up a sentence where the first letter of each word is a hint to what you need to recall. For instance, Dumb Martians Just Sit Nearby Eating Tender Noodles is the phrase to remember the order of the Eight Is Enough children–David, Mary, Joanie, Susan, Nancy, Elizabeth, Tommy, Nicholas. For remembering names, devise a relationship between the name and the physical characteristics of the person. For example, Shirley Temple might be remembered as having curly–which rhymes with Shirley–hair around her temples. When you have an ordered or an unordered list you need to memorize, you can create a story linking the ideas together. The more crazier, the better. If your vocabulary words are success, assistant, cemetery, scrutinize, you might create a story of a successful assistant scrutinizing tombstones in a cemetery, searching for her boss grave. Studying For Tests Write down a study checklist of what will be covered on the test. Make a list of notes, formulas, ideas and text assignments that you are responsible for. Create flashcards–put topics or questions on the front and answers on the back. Have a friend, parent or sibling quiz you. Keep running through the flashcards while you brush your teeth, are on the bus, when you are in the restroom and when you are doing chores. Produce a mock test. One with only the questions and another with only the answers. Hide the answers in a drawer or give them to a parent. Take the test and when completed, compare your responses with the ones on the answer sheet. Keep repeating this process until you know the material backward and forward. If you want to make studying for a test fun, team up with a friend and play the game show Twenty-One. A parent or sibling should host , reading off the questions. You and your friend compete against each other until one of you reaches twenty-one points. Avoid Getting Involved In Too Many Activities If you want to participate in an extracurricular activity, you can reschedule your study time. However, if baseball, ballet or any other activities make you stay up late trying to finish your homework, then you are involved in too many activities. Play Educational Games After the homework is finished, pull out a board game. Monopoly encourages mental calculation when counting money and determining moves, and Clue requires logical deductive skills. Try to figure out the measurements when doubling a recipe in the kitchen. Playing word games with your family or friends can improve spelling skills. Scrabble, anagrams, Wheel of Fortune and word jumbles can teach you to spell new words. II Timothy 2:15 says to study to show yourself approved unto God. If you care enough about your grades to take the time to develop conscientious study habits, you receive better marks, learn self-discipline and will have more options when it comes to selecting colleges. No matter what you choose to do in life, you should have a good education to fall back on. Not everything in life comes easy. The key is to make up your mind to work hard for the things you want. And not to let anyone or anything get in your way. About The Author Annagail Lynes is editor of VisionHope Magazine. Self Righteousness - How The Jones Cured Theirs

June 19th, 2008 by melisendabcs

By Jerry Sakala The truth is the Jones did have such a thing as self righteousness. They actually suffered from feelings of superiority or inferiority complex; a cover up, to hide from their own sins in their soul, from feelings of deep purposelessness and a confused state of mind. The Jones always acted and felt and performed in accordance with what they imagined to be true about themselves and their environment. This is basic fundamental law of the soul. Its been like that since the creation of mankind; In the beginning God created Heaven and Earth. And the earth, which is the heart of man was in confusion, purposelessness and darkness was in the deep. Within them they did not have the power to do what could make them feel significant and influential to make meaningful contribution in life…at least not a permanent basis. Once in a while they would do charitable deeds towards each other, family and friends and of course the community at large. In addition they would entertain themselves and pursue intellectually inspiring and stimulating activities too. All this however could never take away sins in their soul, the feelings of deep purposelessness and their constant confused state of mind. The more they tried to self-improve the more they needed to repent to temporarily wipe out these negative emotions of helplessness and feelings of being stuck in an ever changing uncontrollable chaotic world environment. All this came about because they allowed themselves to be hypnotized by religion and human ethics of morality. The Jones invariably compounded the error by striving for self-righteousness. Their feelings sprung from the false premise that they could achieve a sense of significance and influence in contributing to a religious and or ethical cause of their interest all in a hope of wiping out their sins in their soul, purposelessness and confusion of mind for life. This striving got them in even more heartache, depression and frustration. Religion and human ethics are reverse sides of the same coin. Their cure lay in acknowledging that the coin itself is fake. The truth about the Jones is this: Jesus Christ was sent to earth, born of the virgin Mary. At the age of thirty his cousin, John the Baptist lay his hands on him to baptize him as an act to take away or accept all lifetime sins in the souls of the Jones once and for all. Jesus took upon himself the condemnation of the Jones sins and thus was crucified to shed blood on a cross. Jesus died and rose on the third day. There is now no sin to condemn in the souls of the Jones. They are guilt-free in the name of Jesus Christ who came by water (to be first baptized to take away sin of the Jones and the world once for all) and by blood (crucified and shed blood to die on the cross for the Jones sins). Do the Jones act sinful from time to time? Of course they do. They are flesh and blood. But they thank God their souls have been eternally purified and God himself has promised them a new spiritual body to go with their perfected souls. That will be when they eventually die are resurrected and ruptured. Once you see this simple, rather self evident truth, accept it and believe it, Youll be like the Jones; your sins in your soul will vanish, born again to experience a life of significance, influence and meaningful contribution to an abundant life awaiting the resurrection and rapture to glory of the saints. The Ideal Religion

June 7th, 2008 by melisendabcs

By Richard Sem Lets pretend that a wise holy man, inspired by God Himself, is revealed today. Lets further pretend that he presents us with the Meaning of Life, the answer to at least some of the eternal questions that have vexed us since we climbed down out of the trees. What would happen to his words and deeds? Most likely dozens of pundits and experts would pop out of the woodwork and author dozens of books analyzing every word and nuance of the message. Within a year or two theologians would be interpreting each others interpretations and disputes would arise. Within a decade the original Meaning of Life would be lost in a flurry of sects, rituals and rules. This somewhat pessimistic and over-simplified scenario is a reflection of human natures irresistible tendency to take a sacred concept and, over time, to ritualize, bureaucratize and reinterpret into something very different. As discussed under What would Jesus, Moses and Mohammad Think, I doubted that the myriad denominations that evolved from their words and work were what they had at all intended. I cant believe that they ever imagined the colossal, wealthy and aristocratic bureaucracies that were formed in their names, let alone the superior, judgmental and angry viewpoints that often followed. So, what might they have hoped for? What legacy would a prophet hope to leave behind? How would he or she have seen his or her followers acting a century or two after his or her passing? What would be the structure of their ideal religion, if they had at all intended the formation of a faith and long-term following? What might be the ideal religion? I should first of all mention that my perspective comes out of Christianity because that was my upbringing, but I would think these concepts would apply for any tradition of faith. We might consider, then, the earliest Christians, who didnt yet call themselves Christians. In the early days they met in each others homes, often over a meal, prayed together, and discussed their common history and beliefs. No formal church, with all its rituals and rules, had yet formed, although the Judaic rules and rituals were mostly still followed. Over time, of course, disagreements arose over Jesus words and intentions and over whom or what he actually was. Leaders, such as Paul, eventually stepped forward, imposed structure and interpretation, and we were off and running. Note that bibles were not widely available until the sixteenth century and, besides, most people were illiterate during those early centuries, so it was more necessary for them to depend upon others to read and interpret for them. But could we step back and re-form a faith closer to what Jesus, or the other prophets, might have hoped for? For me, such a faith would be one with an elemental foundation, such as certain holy books (with the possibility that others might be later considered and added), a belief in God and, in the case of Christians, at least an acceptance that Jesus existed and was a holy man worthy of emulation and study. Some general codes of morality such as the Ten Commandments and Golden Rule might be included. Congregates would periodically gather together to study, discuss and pray. Leaders might be elected, but their duties would not include imposing rituals or interpretations. While chapters and verses would be studied and discussed, the overall intentions of the prophet(s) would not be forgotten. I fear that I am naive, that such a congregation couldnt exist for long without falling to the siren song of bureaucracy and a theology of rules and rituals. After all, Utopian philosophies never succeeded because they didnt take into account the fact that greed for power and influence happens, that some will inevitably lead for their own gratification, and that many will follow no matter what. But perhaps this age of the Internet will allow for a discourse closer to the founders intent than anything that has come along so far. We can hope. For more, see my blog at www.therestofus.net. Keeping The Weight Off

June 1st, 2008 by melisendabcs

By Chris Stout Think about it. If you consume more than you burn, you’ll be left with a surplus. If you burn less than you consume, you have weight loss. UnDiet can help you get your weight loss strategy started, but UnDiet alone isn’t going to help you lose pounds. You have to find a balance between how many calories you consume and who many calories you burn. Short-term weight loss plans that restrict your eating habits can actually prevent you from losing weight. You can’t fluctuate between extreme weight loss and extreme weight gain. When you starve yourself, your body stores the energy it already has, and your metabolic rate decreases. When you feast again, you are more likely to gain weight because your metabolism has to compensate for the starve-induced lag. If you go through multiple dieting cycles like this, then it can make it much more difficult for you to keep the weight off after you’ve finished your last diet. You need to take a long-term approach to weight loss. Think of your health, quality of life and future well being. Be willing to make sacrifices so that you can keep your body running smoothly. Don’t start trying to lose weight if you’re only looking for short-term benefits. Crash diets won’t give you the results you need, and if they do, the results won’t be healthy. Lead a normal balanced life. Avoid excess. Eat frequent, balanced meals. Exercise a little bit every day. You don’t have to join a gym to do this, just jog around your block. If you don’t feel like jogging in your own neighborhood, drive to a park or a hiking trail. Just get outside. Have your friends join you. Push each other into a regular fitness routine. It doesn’t really matter what you end up doing, just as long as you make a concerted effort to get your juices flowing every single day. So sit down and make a plan. Think big and be ready to execute. If you want to go on a diet, then you’re not ready to keep the weight off just yet. If you want to embark on a multi-pronged, long-term, sustainable weight loss strategy, then you’re ready to begin. Healthy foods, in small portions, should be consumed four to five times a day. Exercise, whatever the form, needs to happen daily. If you can maintain a balance between caloric intake and caloric burning, then you’ll be in a good position to keep the weight off. Chris Stout, after experiencing his own dietary frustrations, has become an expert on weight loss as well as other health related topics. Chris offers helpful advice and useful tips regarding dietary problems and weight loss in his articles for Medgen. You can find more great information and products for weight loss. 14 Tips to Cure the Summertime Blues

May 29th, 2008 by melisendabcs

By Jeff Herring “There ain’t no cure for the summertime blues.” - Eddie Cochran Just the other day, I came up with what I think is the perfect metaphor to describe this terribly hot summer: Its like standing next to a bonfire in a sauna. With that in mind, is it any wonder that so many of us get some version of the summertime blues? So lets look at some of the various types of summertime blues, and then what to do about them. The Plain Ol Summertime Blues Kids dont seem to be bothered by the heat as much as adults. For many adults, the heat saps energy and motivation, wears them out, and keeps them inside. Spending too much time inside is not only unhealthy physically and emotionally, it severely limits your perspective on the world. Many people end up moving only to go from the house to work and back again. What to do 1. Get up and get outside! Be sure to take the necessary precautions, just get outside. 2. If the heat is just too much for you, gyms, malls and theaters are air-conditioned, and get you out of the house. 3. Go do something! How long can you watch other people live on TV? Vacation Blues We behave strangely around vacation time. Somehow we believe that cramming a years worth of leisure and living into a few days or even two weeks is going to be a relaxing thing. Then we come back exhausted, stressed out, and needing a vacation from our vacation. Another strange thing we do is make sure the house is immaculate before we leave. When my dad did this as I grew up, I always wondered if we were getting it clean for the burglars. Now I do the same thing. Why do we do this? What to Do 4. Dont try to cram too much into each day. 5. Think small, aim low, go slow. Relax. 6. Leave the schedule at home. Dump the itinerary and just have fun. 7. One of the most relaxing vacations can be one at home. Its restful and inexpensive. Post-vacation Blues This is what psychologists call post-reinforcement pause. Thats just a ten dollar phrase for getting back to reality after lots of good stuff. What to Do 8. Take several small vacations instead of just one long one. 9.Come back early enough to have enough transition time between vacation and work. Transition Blues For some of us, the summer brings with it times of transition. Life changes such as a graduation, a move, or beginning something new can be bittersweet. What to Do 10. Allow some room for the sadness that naturally comes at the end of one phase of life. 11. Celebrate the accomplishments and memories of the phase of life that is ending. 12. Make room for the excitement that a new phase of life can bring. What are some things you can do now that you couldnt do before? The Weve Got It Backwards Blues Remember when we were kids and had the whole summer off from school? The problem was we were kids, didnt have much money to spend and didnt know what we wanted to do. Now we are adults, hopefully have some extra income and some idea of what we would like to do, and we have to work all summer. Its just backwards, methinks. What to Do 13. Do something child-like. Thats child-like, not child-ish. Having a squirt gun fight in the yard could be a lot of fun and amuse the neighbors, too. 14. Do something youve always wanted to do. Fulfill a dream. Marketing Training - Things to Look for in a Training Program

May 18th, 2008 by melisendabcs

By Kelly Smith One thing I have learned in network marketing is when you have training in one specific company you may be doomed when applying it to the next. Why is generic training in the marketing industry so important? Compensation plans are different, products and services can be different even the way the company does presentations can be different. Let me give you an example of what can happen to peoples mindset when they have gone through company-oriented training. When we were involved in a company that dealt in long distance plans, it went under many people even the ones making good money, quit. Just quit. Heres why they didnt have training they could apply to any company or business that taught them about mindset, being a leader or how to develop a solid team. When you have generic training, you literally have the ability even if you lost all your money (bankruptcy for example) to start all over again, no fear. Do you think Donald Trump or Robert Kiyosoki would have a problem, if someone took all of their money to start from scratch? They have the knowledge. Just remember, yes knowledge is power, but only if you act on it and take massive action. Here are some key things to look for in a generic training program: Talking to People/Leads on The Phone Learn how to talk to leads on the phone and within minutes get them to evaluate your business. A trainer/mentor should be able to show you how to close people to evaluate your program within 45 seconds. The introductory conversation should only be about 2 - 3 minutes in length. Leads Learning how to generate leads can ultimately save you money and bring you people who are truly interested in your business. They will also have previewed it before you even spoke to them. Lets face it, it takes work to generate your own leads and setting it up. If you truly want to generate your own leads it isnt a magic pill. Bringing people to your website is a process, so start calling leads while setting up your lead generations system. Mindset You hear it all the time in those company trainings, stay positive, have energy when you talk to people and have the right mindset. Heres the Truth. Without the right MINDSET, nothing will work. Did you know you can literally reprogram your subconscious and unconscious areas of the mind to train your beliefs for success and failure? With the right information, it can be done. Its not just about positive or motivational thinking. Do they teach you how to tap into the right mindset? This should be the heart of the training but it usually isnt. Conference Calls/Presentations Doing your own presentations over the phone or online can be so powerful and save you time. Why would you want to spend 20 to 30 minutes of your time talking to every prospect when you can talk to many prospects for 20 to 30 minutes once or twice? Did you know ultimately the person who makes the big money is the one doing the conference calls and presentations? This is an extremely powerful skill to learn. Teach others Be a leader. Also not in the typical company training manual, they just teach you duplication, but not really how to teach others. Why dont they teach you how to become a leader? Because they need followers, especially ones who cant be self-sufficient. Be a Leader When you are a leader, you are constantly in control of your own destiny, personally and financially. You will have true partnerships instead of depending on your upline. Learn how to cut the apron strings and be on your own. Quit the blame game because it is your business and your responsibility. Leaders are accountable. Become a role model. Conclusion There are so many get rich Automated Programs but its hard to know what really works. I stick to real people who have made money and can mentor me or answer my questions if needed. There are some very successful marketers so look for ones who will be accessible and be leery of programs that will supposedly bring in droves of customers, business partners and clients and you dont have any real contact with the marketers who started the program in the first place. Also, many of these programs will teach people to spam others to get into their business. That should be a red flag. Kelly and Brad Smith are the founders of BKS Marketing & Income Strategies. Weight Loss Online — The Fastest & Easiest Weight Loss Plan

May 14th, 2008 by melisendabcs

By Michael Smith, MD My first article provided steps for fast healthy weight loss. This was followed by my easy weight loss plan. So, if you combine the two, you’ll have my Fastest Easiest Weight Loss Plan — that you should never do! Weight Loss Online — Avoid Fast Plans Fast weight loss plans cause diet shock. If you’re not familiar with diet shock, read the article found at this link, Weight Loss Online–Diet Shock. The faster you lose weight the greater the subsequent drop in your resting metabolic rate. Your body thinks it’s starving and in order to conserve energy it will slowdown the metabolic rate. This translates into fewer calories burned on a daily basis, which in turn, creates a positive energy balance. A positive energy balance is simply extra calories left over at the end of the day that you store as fat, yippee! Unless, of course, you eat less and/or exercise more to compensate for the extra calories brought to you by your own body’s slower metabolism. So, as you can see, you really shouldn’t like fast weight loss plans…unless it comes from me. My plan allows you to lose weight at the fastest possible rate while minimizing your body’s efforts to slow your metabolism. Weight Loss Online — Avoid Easy Plans What’s wrong with easy weight loss plans? Nothing. If a weight loss diet actually makes the weight loss process easier without setting the stage for weight re-gain (the inevitable weight gain after dieting) than by all means go for it. Unfortunately and especially true for weight loss online, easy plans mean bad plans and lots of weight re-gain in the future. How? Easy usually means fast (see above on fast weight loss plans) and fast is usually achieved by severely restricting calories. Since you are basically starving, your metabolism slows and the weight re-gain chain reaction is on. My easy weight loss plan will not slow your metabolism because I think it’s wrong to starve. My plan is exactly what it’s supposed to be…easy. It still works, but the work is easier to do. Here is the plan for Fast & Easy Weight Loss Online… Week One — Cut calories by 100, do nothing else. Week Two — Cut additional 250 calories (total=350) and add a protein shake with mostly whey protein. For most people, replacing a meal with the protein shake will give a net reduction of about 300-350 calories. Week Three — Cut another 250 calories (total=600) and drink two shakes of mostly whey protein. The best time to drink them is in the morning and in the middle of your longest period of not eating. For me, I don’t eat from 3 pm until 8 or 9 at night. So I will drink a shake in the morning and one around 5 pm. Week Four — Repeat week three. Week Five — Repeat week two by adding back 250 calories and drinking one shake. Week Six — Repeat week one by adding back 250 calories.Repeat the entire cycle until you reach your ideal weight. If you follow the steps outlined above, you will lose weight at the highest rate allowed for healthy weight loss (4 pounds per week). Plus it’s a breeze to follow. We’ll that’s it for my fast and east weight loss plan. Now, once you start this plan, make sure you prepare for your real problem…weight re-gain. Buying A Diamond Engagement Ring

May 9th, 2008 by melisendabcs

By Matt Ryan When you, or together with your significant other, decide that it’s time to get engaged and take your relationship to the next level you will no doubt suddenly find yourself in the market for a diamond engagement ring. In the beginning this can seem an extremely daunting task as you go from jeweler to jeweler and are shown engagement ring after engagement. However difficult it may seem, you will soon find that the most difficult part of buying a diamond engagement ring is the actual selection of the one you think will be the right one. Prior to heading out and looking at what’s available here are a few tips to help you choose the right ring and help keep some of your sanity. Tips for Buying a Diamond Engagement Ring 1. If you intend on making the purchase on your own, it’s important to have a good idea of the types and kinds of jewelry she likes. Look for diamond engagement rings that fit in with her style and match the flair she likes to present herself with. 2. Determine how much you are able to afford. Many people suggest keeping the amount of your diamond engagement ring purchase to an equivalent of how much income you make over a two-month period. This will help you stay within your budget and prevent any adverse financial implications as a result of the purchase. 3. Have all of your essential credit information and documents ready to go before entering the jeweler’s store. This is especially true if you have the sense that you are going to need to borrow money, or put your diamond engagement ring purchase on credit. Knowing how much credit you have available will help speed up the selection process. 4. Bring somebody with you. It is always easier to have a second opinion when buying a diamond engagement ring. If possible, see if your mother or sister or your girlfriends best friend can accompany you on this journey. Whoever comes with, be sure they know your girlfriend and have some sense of her style, as this will greatly improve your ability to choose the right ring. 5. Do not leave the store without all of your documents in tow. After you complete the buying process of your diamond engagement ring you will be offered a variety of certifications for both the diamond and the ring itself. It’s important that you get copies of these so that later you may insure the ring or have its value replaced in case of theft. Now that you have completed the journey of buying her the perfect diamond engagement ring, it’s time to work on the next step. The proposal. By Jeff Herring Private practice marketing is enough of a challenge without all the obstacles we put in our own way. Here is an example of how I got in my own way and the reframe I used to remove the obstacle. It was fall of ‘04 and I was getting ready to expand in some way, looking for other things to do and I was looking for ways to build my practice, even though I had a great one at the time. But as those things began to grow, one of the things noticed was I was really kind of holding myself back. And I thought what in the world is this about? So there I was at, what was that then, 46‑47, having experienced more success than I’d ever thought I would in my whole career. I mean, I had a full private practice, straight pay, no insurance, no managed care, I was a professional speaker, I’d been a syndicated relationship columnist for several years, more things than I knew what to do with, and more business than I could handle. So as I kind of dug deeper into what was holding me back, I had this notion. And I’m not sure where it came from, still it doesn’t matter, I had this notion that somehow I had peaked, OK? And this was as good as it was going to get. OK, I’d gotten lucky, I’d gotten successful early, and I had peaked. And at best I could hang on and maintain the way things were, and at worst it was all downhill from here, sort of the downslide into retirement. Now, do you think that would get in my way a little bit? Heck, yeah! So I started playing with a reframe. How else can I look at this, how can I argue with this obstacle? And being a child of ’70s music, I mean, give me any song and I’ll tell you who did it, what year, probably what cut it was on the album or 8‑track, that’s dating myself. What began to play in my head was an old Bachman‑Turner Overdrive song with the chorus “You aint seen nothing yet,” OK? And so that kind of became my theme song for a while, “You aint seen nothing yet.” And it got me past that obstacle, and I’ve expanded a little bit in the last few years. So whatever it is for you it may be silly sounding like mine is, and even the reframe or the solution strategy might be silly, but it works. It was there, it was in my way, and that song works.
